Caring for our Neighbors in Need During the Winter

Beginning in October and lasting through the winter, a new set of challenges falls upon our neighbors in need experiencing homelessness. The rainy and cold weather can exacerbate current living conditions thus making it harder to function day-to-day. To ease the difficulties brought on by these seasons, our Community Resource Center and Outreach team is dedicated to helping our neighbors in need navigate these times with dignity and resilience. Here’s how:

Providing Comfort in the Cold Through our Community Resource Center

This winter, our Community Resource Center aims to be a beacon of care with a goal of alleviating the hardships brought on by the weather. Firstly, we understand that even the most basic necessities can make a significant difference. Through our Cold-Weather kits, those in need are filled with essentials like socks, hot hands, mittens, along with items like toothpaste, hand sanitizer and deodorant. Having these kits readily available to those in need provides a sense of security and comfort during the harshest conditions.

Additionally, some of our clients can qualify for short-term motel stays provided through our Homeless Prevention & Basic Needs Program. The purpose of these motel stays is to give those working towards a long-term housing solution time and a safe space to put the pieces of the plan together.

Meeting Our Neighbors Where They Are: Street Outreach Initiatives

Along with our Community Resource Center, we have a dedicated Outreach team member who spends time in the community, connecting with our neighbors in need where they are at. This street outreach initiative broadens the scope of individuals we are able to assist. Just like in our Community Resource Center, we are able to distribute items like Cold-Weather kits, tents, tarps and more. These items are essential in protection against the elements.

Strength in Numbers

We believe through collective efforts, we can make a bigger impact to those experiencing hardships during the cold winter months. That’s why we have created a Winter Donation Drive to collect tangible goods that can provide warmth and comfort to those facing the chill of the season. Items donated not only provide physical comfort but also a sense of hope and support to those facing the challenges of winter.  Please join us and consider donating these items to our Community Resource Center:

  • Cup of noodles

  • Protein bars

  • Hot hands

  • Blankets

  • Tarps

  • Hand sanitizer

  • $5 coffee gift card

These items can equip us with the power to provide a warm meal and the resources for our neighbors in need to stay warm for another night. Donations can be dropped off at our Tacoma Thrift Store which is open Monday – Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm.
